108 ACRES OF ASPHALT PAVING
P. Flanigan and Sons, Inc. recently completed the largest HMA paving project in our 135 year history – the 115 Acre Volkswagen Port of Entry Facility at Tradepoint Atlantic. Flanigan produced and placed 108 acres (133,000 tons) of new HMA paving at this facility. The paving spanned a 7 month period, from October, 2019 to May, 2020. There were several days when the dedicated Flanigan paving crew placed over 2,200 tons in a shift.
This auto terminal represents VW’s newest in the U.S. and marks an approximately $150 million dollar investment, as well as the creation of 100 new full time jobs. The facility will process vehicles arriving by ship from Europe – this includes VW, Audi, Lamborghini, and Bentley vehicles. After processing, these vehicles get loaded onto trains or trucks, and are distributed to 300 dealers in the mid-Atlantic region. This facility will responsible for the import of 120,000 vehicles per year, with increased volumes expected over time. Tradepoint Atlantic is a 3,300 acre former brownfield site, once home to the Bethlehem Steel Corporation, formerly the largest integrated steel mill in the U.S.
The Port of Baltimore has handled more cars (858,000 in 2019) than any other U.S. port for nine consecutive years. ARCO National (St. Louis, MO) was the General Contractor for the project.
